Graeme Eley has had a wide variety of work experience in administration. His working life started out as a Trainee Accountant in an iconic firm in North Melbourne, whilst completing his year 12 studies part-time. He moved on to a well-known Public Authority where he took on Payroll duties, including supervision of a payroll group, then editor of a departmental magazine whilst performing payroll supervisor duties within the department.

Looking to further his career, he moved over to various Costing groups to coincide with the beginning of a Business Degree in Accounting. Upon completion of his degree, he was successful in applying for the position of Budget Accountant at a well-known hospital in Melbourne’s CBD. This eventually led to a promotion as a Financial Accountant and supervision of the Accounting Department. Following a rationalisation of Administration within hospitals, he was further promoted to the role of Management Accountant at an associated hospital.

Wishing to broaden his experience in other industries, he took on a number of roles after that, including:

  • A Systems Support role with a private firm, using his accounting systems expertise to implement an Accounting system in many hospitals throughout Victoria
  • A Management Accountant role in a Not-for-Profit organisation
  • A Financial Accountant role in a multi-national organisation
  • An Accountant in a Community Health organisation

For the past decade Graeme has taken on a number of positions within councils throughout Victoria, with roles including Management Accountant, Capital Works Business Support Accountant and Management Accounting Officer.

Graeme is a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) and has also assisted family members, who run their small businesses, with their Tax compliance obligations.

Such a variety of roles has taught Graeme to value critical aspects in business, the first being the importance of customer service, whether that be external or internal. Financial Management, Systems Management and Financial compliance are also high on his priority list.

At the same time, he values the simple elements of business, including a connection with people, a desire to assist, guide and train, as well as being able to communicate with and understand people, regardless of their Financial and/or Business background.

Graeme also understands the different challenges that running a small business will present. Having the ABBS support, resources, training and knowledge within the group have given him the added ability to step forward and ultimately endeavour to make a difference in the working lives of not only small business owners but also those within the ABBS group.
